What is DNS Propagation?

When you update DNS records (e.g., changing your domain's IP address or switching email providers), the changes don't take effect instantly worldwide. DNS resolvers cache records based on the TTL (Time to Live) value. Until caches expire and refresh, different resolvers may return different results. This process of updates spreading across all DNS servers globally is called DNS propagation.

DNS Record Types

• A: Maps a domain to an IPv4 address
• AAAA: Maps a domain to an IPv6 address
• CNAME: Creates an alias pointing to another domain name
• MX: Specifies mail servers responsible for receiving email
• TXT: Holds arbitrary text data, often used for SPF, DKIM, and domain verification
• NS: Identifies the authoritative nameservers for a domain
